Greyt Angels Greyhound Adoption is proud to announce that it has been invited to partner with The Greyhound Inmate Experience (T.G.I.E.), a 501(c)(3) non-profit based out of Michigan.
Established in 2010, T.G.I.E.'s purpose is to "socialize, train, and care for retired greyhounds in a prison environment and to educate the public of the redemptive qualities and rehabilitative benefits of the program."
Every ten weeks, twenty greyhounds are put into the care and supervision of forty specially selected and trained incarcerated dog handlers, with two inmate handlers assigned to each greyhound. The handlers work together to obedience train and prepare the greyhounds as they transition from racer to a beloved pet.
The lives of the inmate handlers are also transformed through participation in this program as they become revitalized and engaged in a daily purpose. They experience the miracle of unconditional love. They learn to trust, to be patient, and become compassionate. They begin to understand "teamwork" and effective communication skills and they are willing to accept responsibility and be accountable. Beyond that, they write reports, compose poems, knit sweaters, sew coats, and make dog beds.
After ten weeks, the greyhounds finish their training, graduate, join an adoption group, and are then adopted to their forever homes. Then a new group of twenty greyhounds are admitted into the program. To date, T.G.I.E. has graduated over 750 greyhounds from the program.
"T.G.I.E. is an amazing program that is extremely inspirational and has touched many hearts," said Carol Dickinson, president of Greyt Angels. "It's really amazing what love can do in transforming the lives of the greyhounds and their handlers. We are very happy and privileged to be able to join the other 'greyt' adoption groups already a part of the greater T.G.I.E. family."
