Greyt Angels Greyhound Adoption is proud to announce that it has been invited to partner with The Greyhound Inmate Experience (T.G.I.E.), a 501(c)(3) non-profit based out of Michigan.
Established in 2010, T.G.I.E.'s purpose is to "socialize, train, and care for retired greyhounds in a prison environment and to educate the public of the redemptive qualities and rehabilitative benefits of the program." Every ten weeks, twenty greyhounds are put into the care and supervision of forty specially selected and trained incarcerated dog handlers, with two inmate handlers assigned to each greyhound. The handlers work together to obedience train and prepare the greyhounds as they transition from racer to a beloved pet. The lives of the inmate handlers are also transformed through participation in this program as they become revitalized and engaged in a daily purpose. They experience the miracle of unconditional love. They learn to trust, to be patient, and become compassionate. They begin to understand "teamwork" and effective communication skills and they are willing to accept responsibility and be accountable. Beyond that, they write reports, compose poems, knit sweaters, sew coats, and make dog beds. After ten weeks, the greyhounds finish their training, graduate, join an adoption group, and are then adopted to their forever homes. Then a new group of twenty greyhounds are admitted into the program. To date, T.G.I.E. has graduated over 750 greyhounds from the program. "T.G.I.E. is an amazing program that is extremely inspirational and has touched many hearts," said Carol Dickinson, president of Greyt Angels. "It's really amazing what love can do in transforming the lives of the greyhounds and their handlers. We are very happy and privileged to be able to join the other 'greyt' adoption groups already a part of the greater T.G.I.E. family." The latest updates about this new partnership between Greyt Angels and T.G.I.E. will be posted on Greyt Angels' Facebook page. ![]() Meet Smiley, the hound who smiles. Smiley is an extra fuzzy guy who loves getting brushed, and will even sit while you do it. Smiley loves relaxing in the kiddie pool and lounging around the house. Smiley is a laid back, quiet older guy who is crate trained, walks well on a leash, and is an excellent passenger in the car. Smiley is the most gentle guy, even when taking treats from your hand, which he loves. Smiley gets along with other dogs and doesn’t mind kids, but no cats for this guy. Smiley is missing a toe on his left front paw, which doesn’t slow him down, but instead makes him that much more unique. Smiley will require a family that will have patience for him as he adjusts to a new environment and routine. He can take just a little while to let his true personality shine, but once he does the smiles and happy tail are worth it. To fill out an adoption application for this greyt guy, click here!
,Don't let Melvin's (aka "Mel" or "Smelly Melly") premature grey snout fool you, he's a young boy who just celebrated his third birthday! He was extremely shy and easily spooked when he first came to Greyt Angels last fall, but he has really come a long way since then. He is a quick learner and has shown great progress in his house manners throughout his time with us. Melvin has opened up more to people, but he is not an overly affectionate hound. He will come to get some human lovin' and attention when he feels like it, but once he's had enough he's ready to go back to "his spot" in the living room to chill. Despite being a little reserved with humans, he has great social skills with other dogs. He loves his foster siblings and loves to play with them outside in the yard. He also lives with a cat and ignores her and will do anything to avoid her if he can. He will play with stuffie toys on occasion, but prefers to chew on Benebones. Melvin is getting braver when new people come into his home and if they ignore him, he will slowly make his way up to them to get a quick sniff and possible a pet or two. He really is a sweet boy but will need a family that will understand that he will probably always be a little standoffish and not the most affectionate hound. He would also probably prefer a home where he is not the only hound! If you can love an accept Melvin for who he is and where he is at in his retirement journey we promise he would make an excellent addition to your family!

Pony is a sweet and beautifully colored brindle greyhound mix (a.k.a. a "Lurcher"), who is approximately 4-6 years young. She came to us from the American Lurcher Project. She is an exceptionally fun girl who loves people, especially kids, having fun, celebrations, and living life! She loves to go for walks and has an adventurous spirit (perfect for a family who loves to be outdoors), but she is also very snuggly and would be just as happy to spend a lazy Sunday on the couch with you watching baseball. She gets along very well with her canine siblings, which include other greyhounds and small dogs. But she would prefer a home without any cats. Pony does occasionally have mild seizures, but they don't hold back her zest for life and she has been doing extremely well on a daily seizure medication, which is not very expensive. Pony has been with Greyt Angels for over six months now and we just can't believe a hound as loving as her with such a rock star personality hasn't found her forever family yet. But we think that means that she's waiting for an extra special family to come along any day now and make her their's forever! If you would like more information on Pony, please contact Greyt Angels at (574) 535-3210 or greytangels@gmail.com.

This is a hound who doesn't like to be alone and would do best in a multi-dog household, or one where a person is home during the day. He absolutely lights up when his humans come home from work! This big guy is looking for someone who will be just as excited to see him at the end of a long day and is ready to give his forever home and family his heart!
To fill out an adoption application for this greyt guy, click here! Meet Kiki a retired beautiful black brindle girl, who is doing very well with her greyhound and other dog foster siblings. She is a very happy girl who celebrates every day! Kiki loves people and is very affectionate and sweet. She will sweetly flip your hand to receive pets or a neck rub and loves to be with her family when you're home. Kiki does not do well with small animals, like cats or small dogs, and would do best with older children and maybe even a fenced in yard where she can run and play!
To fill out an adoption application for this greyt girl, click here! ![]() Sara Howard is one of Greyt Angels' foster moms and recently celebrated her one year anniversary as a foster with our group. In this blog, she shares her experience from over the past year and why you should consider fostering for Greyt Angels: I celebrated my one year anniversary as a foster with Greyt Angels at the end of October 2017. Becoming a foster is one of the best decisions I have ever made. I have fostered 5 very special greyhounds; Lily, Dexter, Boo, Red, and Jane. It's true, I've made a difference for them by providing a home, a warm pillow or two to lay around on (a lot), food in their bellies, and most importantly, lots of love. But what have I gotten in return?
Contact me through Facebook or contact Greyt Angels if you're interested in fostering, adopting, or helping in any other way. All I did to get started was send a Facebook message and then attend a greyhound meet and greet, and now you're reading my story. Maybe you'll write your own a year from now. The hounds and Greyt Angels thanks you. |
